Dental Crown Cost in Australia: What You Pay Per Tooth
A crown runs $1,500 to $2,500 per tooth. If the tooth also needs a root canal and a build-up underneath, that single tooth commonly reaches $3,000 to $4,500. The second number is the one that surprises people, because it rarely appears in the first conversation.
We coordinate treatment in Vietnam, so we have an interest in one option mentioned near the end. The rest of this page is about getting a fair deal in Australia, which is what most people reading it will do.
Crown, onlay or veneer
A crown covers the whole tooth. An onlay covers part of it, keeps more of your own tooth and costs less. A veneer faces the front only and is a cosmetic treatment rather than a structural one.
These three get used loosely in conversation and sometimes in quotes. Ask which one is planned, per tooth, in writing — it changes both the price and how much of your tooth is removed.
What drives the price
- Material — zirconia and pressed ceramic cost more than metal-backed porcelain
- Whether the tooth needs a root canal first, which is quoted separately
- Whether a post and core is needed to build the tooth up before crowning
- Whether the crown is milled in-house on the day or sent to an external lab
- The dentist's location and whether a specialist prosthodontist is involved
What the quote often leaves out
- The root canal, if the nerve is involved — often more than the crown itself
- The post and core build-up under the crown
- Replacing an old filling before preparation
- A temporary crown worn between visits
- Gum treatment where the tooth sits in an unhealthy pocket
- A night guard if you grind, usually recommended afterwards
The root canal is the item that moves the total most. A crown quoted at $1,800 on a tooth that turns out to need endodontic treatment and a post can finish near $4,000. Ask at the first appointment whether the nerve is likely to be involved, and get both figures before you agree to anything.
Insurance, honestly
Extras cover contributes to major dental, but annual limits are low against these numbers and waiting periods of twelve months are standard. One crown can consume a year’s limit on its own.
Before treatment, ask your fund for your remaining annual limit and the benefit payable against the specific item numbers your dentist will use. After treatment the answer costs you money instead of saving it.
Six questions before you agree
- Is this a crown or an onlay? An onlay covers less tooth and costs less.
- Which material, by name — zirconia, e.max, or porcelain fused to metal?
- Does the tooth need a root canal, and is that inside this figure?
- Is a post and core included?
- Milled here on the day, or sent to a lab? Both are fine; the price differs.
- What is the warranty, and what voids it?
The overseas option, stated plainly
Published price lists at Vietnamese clinics put ceramic crowns at roughly 3 to 8 million dong per tooth — about $160 to $435 AUD at August 2026 rates, depending on material. As in Australia, root canal treatment and a build-up are separate items.
For a single crown that gap rarely justifies a flight on its own. It starts to matter when several teeth need work at once, or when crowns sit alongside implants in the same plan. If you are weighing one tooth, the honest answer is usually to have it done at home.
